Gamecube Controller (PC Edition): If you have a Wii U PC Adapter, then you can use a Gamecube controller by connecting it to your PC, then changing your controller setting to DINPUT in options.
XBox One Controller (X1 Edition): This is pretty straightforward. Go to options, and change your controller setting to XINPUT. In case its relevant, Im using a gamecube controller always for this game. The black USB port is for data and the grey one is for rumble, so if you can only plug in one, do the black one. In my experience it only works if the adapter is already plugged in and set to PC mode before you start up the game.
